Creating a Happiness Jar

Jars, Bottles and various types of containers have long played an important role in the magickal practices of various cultures and traditions. There is probably a type of jar for every kind of goal or purpose. Some of the more common types of spells performed which use jars and bottles include:
  • Honey Jars
  • Break-Up Bottles
  • Money Jars
  • Cursing and Banishing Bottles
  • Witch Bottles for Protection

Recently when speaking with a client about various types of Bottle-Spells, I was asked "What if you love someone so much all you want is for them to be is happy." I thought about this and so I designed a 'Happiness-Jar'.

To make a Happiness Jar you will need to gather the following things:
  • A Bottle or Jar with a metal lid
  • Your Personal Concerns
  • A Lodestone & Magnetic Sand
  • Blessing Oil
  • White Candle (or whatever color makes you feel 'happy')
  • Incense (anything you find pleasant and uplifting)
  • Pen and Paper
To begin, wash your jar thoroughly in warm soapy water to physically cleanse it of any leftover materials from its previous contents. Then gently wipe the bottle and lid down with a bit of ammonia to remove any previous/negative spiritual energies.

Take out your pen and paper and make a list of all the things that make you feel 'happy'. For example, I'll share part of my own list with you.
  • A Good Book
  • New Episodes of My Favorite T.V. Shows
  • Cool, Rainy Days
  • Shopping Online
  • Thrift Stores
  • Collecting Tarot Cards
  • Writing
  • Good Food
  • Crafting Magical Items
  • The Color Yellow
  • The smell of Cool Water Cologne
  • Blog Comments (hint, hint)
  • Disco Music
When you are done, place the list in the jar. Put your personal concerns on top of the list. Now your job is to find symbols that relate to what makes you happy. For example my Happiness-Jar contains  a small blank piece of paper and a pencil (writing), a small tarot card (collecting tarot cards), the logo for ebay (shopping online), a yellow feather, a Cool Water Cologne sample, etc....

Anoint the lodestone with blessing oil and place it in the jar on top of the lists/symbols. Feed it with magnetic sand saying "as I feed you so will you feed me and attract those things to me which will bring me happiness". Place the lid on the jar. Carve your name on the white candle and anoint it with blessing oil. Affix the white-candle to the lid of the jar. Light the candle and incense. Sincerely pray the 23rd Psalm making your petition. Let the candle burn down in its own time.

Its important that you put things in your Happiness Jar that relate directly to what makes you happy and not indirectly. For example you might say "Dean, you love books so much why not put some coins in your happiness jar so that you have money to buy books?" The reason is because I want to focus on what makes me happy and not how I will attain those things. By focusing on the books that make me happy and not a means to attain them, I have eliminated a step and moved myself that much closer to what makes me happy.

You can perform this operation on any day that you deem appropriate. Burn a candle on top of the jar as little or as often as you feel it is needed. However, it is important that you do work the jar at least once a month.  I would suggest that you begin the operation on the same day of the week that you were born and then once a month when the moon is Full.

Identifying & Countering Psychic Attack

What is Psychic Attack?

It is a simple fact of life that as humans in the modern world we are bombarded every day by stress and negativity. Such negativity may take the form of nasty co-workers, congested traffic, feeling of jealousy and insecurity, worries over finances, etc…

Normally, we can shrug off the effects of this negativity in various ways. Some ways we can lessen and negate the effects of daily stress and negativity include, but is not limited to the following:

• Eating Healthy
• Breathing Correctly
• Exercise
• Meditation
• Prayer
• Affirmations
• Visualization

However, a psychic attack is thought to be much more powerful than the normal negativity that we encounter on a day to day basis. Psychic Attack is define as an assault upon the individual’s mind, body, and/or spirit by an outside force or forces manifesting in various forms. A psychic attack differs from daily stress in that it consists of a focused buildup of negative energy which has been directed at the individual.

Psychic Attack is often accomplished through various spells. An enemy may capture your personal concerns and make a doll in your likeness that they ritually torture. They may burn a candle or a series of candles on your name, or call upon negative spirits to torment you. They may use astral projection to invade your dreams, disrupt your sleep, and exploit your fears. In some instances they may hide something in your home, car, office, or anywhere you often walk over to place a jinx on you. However, a psychic attack can be perpetuated with nothing more than an envious gaze, called the Evil Eye.

It has been said that only certain individuals have the power to 'throw' the evil eye, when in actuality all people have this ability. The power of the evil eye is tied to the emotions of the individual. It is normally activated by extreme feelings of envy and/or hate, which rises from the individual and is channeled through the eyes at the target. Many people throw the evil eye and are not aware of the fact, while others have learned to do this at will. At its core, the evil eye exist to spread loss

Identifying Symptoms

Symptoms of psychic attack commonly take the form of emotional disturbances or physical illness such as migraines, confusion, nightmares, fever, sudden paranoia, general malaise, weakness, tightness in the chest, irritability, inexplicable bruising of the body, unexplainable foul odors which appear and disappear, hearing odd sounds, insomnia, an inability to shut off negative thoughts about one’s self and one’s life, etc….

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important that you first rule out mundane causes which may be responsible for said symptoms. True psychic attack is thought to be rather rare, therefore you may find a rational explanation for your symptoms the majority of the time. Secondly, you must take into consideration the mental state of the afflicted individual. Many people who believe they are the target of a psychic attack are actually mentally ill and suffering from some form of psychosis such as schizophrenia.

Left unchecked a psychic attack can grow in strength, intensity, and duration which can and will eventually lead to severe consequences.

Diagnosing Psychic Attack

If you believe that you are the target of a psychic attack a divination may be in order to determine so. If you cannot perform the divination for yourself, then it may be necessary to have someone perform it for you.

Certain folk-magic practices prescribe various rituals to determine if one has been the target of a psychic attack, specifically in the form of the evil eye. Some of the rituals include:

• In Eastern Europe, three matches are lit one at a time and dropped into a pan of water. If the matches float on the water and cross one another is considered a sure sign of spiritual attack.
• In Greece, a drop of olive oil is placed in a glass of holy water. If the drop floats you are fine, but if it sinks it is thought to be the effects of the evil eye. Alternately, two drops of olive oil are placed into a clear glass of water. If the drops stay separated there is no cause for worry.
• In Mexico, a fresh egg is rubbed over the body or alternately placed under the person’s bed overnight. The egg is then cracked open in a bowl and inspected. If there is blood, or anything ‘hard’ in the yoke, or the individual is believed to be under the influence of the evil eye.

Countering Psychic Attack

Once you have identified your symptoms, ruled out all mundane (i.e. rational) explanations and have diagnosed the attack it becomes necessary to counter the assault. Just as there are many ways to psychically attack an individual, there are numerous ways to counter a psychic attack.

Therefore, rather than give you specific counter-measures I offer an overview of various methods.  Most methods of countering a psychic attack will fall into the category of a Cleansing, a Reversing, or a combination of each.

Cleansings involve removing the curse from the individual/object and keeping it from returning. In these cases the negative energy of the curse is often transmuted into positive energy. Methods of cleanings include but are not limited to the following:

• Ritual Bathing
• Visualization
• Smudging with Incense
• Anointing with Oil
• Energy Work
• Transference
• Ritual Banishment
• Petition to a Higher Power
• Counter Spells
• Use of Amulets or Talismans

Reversing involves sending the curse back to its point of origin where it will play out as it has been directed when it was cast. Methods of reversing curses back to their sender include but are not limited to the following:

• Petition to a Higher Power
• Counter Spells
• Use of Amulets and Talismans
• Other

There is also the option of attacking your attacker directly. The act of placing a curse on your tormentor can be very cathartic and may represent a healing for the individual. Some may argue that sending a curse back to its point of origin is a curse in and of itself. Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to know the identity of the person who has attacked you. In your workings to counter psychic attack you can focus your intent by sending negative energy back ‘from whence it came’ or stating ‘the person psychically attacking me' in your petitions.

In my research I found at least one instance of employing a curse against someone who has cursed you, although I am sure that there are more examples. Denis Alvarado in her book, Voodoo Dolls in Magick and Ritual states that “[one] way to reverse a curse is to create a voodoo doll of the person that cursed you.” She then instructs the reader to ritually burn the doll with the intention that as the doll burns away the curse placed upon you by the person will be transformed into “something harmless.”

A Guide to Choosing Your Tarot Deck

Purchasing a Tarot Deck is a lot like purchasing a car. It is not something that you do without certain considerations. They are:

  • Your Level of Study
  • Type of Deck
  • Size & Shape
  • Purpose of Deck
  • Price

Your Level of Study

My first Tarot Deck was the Rider-Waite. As you may know the RW deck is arguably the most popular deck on the market, due to the fact that each card has a representative image in contradiction to older decks at that time. Because of this the RW deck has spawned many ‘clones’ such as the Herbal Tarot and it is often the first deck that students learn from continuing their study with other decks.

The downside to learning from the RW deck is that it colored all the decks I would own/use thereafter. There are still many decks that don't have representative images on every card. For example, take a look at the two cards below representing the three of cups.

The 'plain' versions don't really give you a lot of imagery to draw upon so instead of allowing the image on the card to be a springboard for your intuition, you have to focus your logical mind on remembering the given meaning of the card.

Type of Deck

Not all decks contain the same number of cards or are divided in the same manner as the Rider Waite. Therefore, I am not particularly fond of any deck that deviates from the RW mold. Here's an example from the Elemental Tarot.

There are also decks that are tailored to a specific demographic or based on a specific philosophy. For example, as a gay man I purchased and liked the Gay Tarot. However, I didn't care for the Witches Tarot which is based on the teachings of the Kabbalah. If you are a beginner there are decks in circulation with the meanings printed directly on the card! Sometimes you will find a deck that is labeled as a Tarot deck, but which is actually an oracle deck.

Size and Shape

In addition, there are also aesthetic reasons to choose or reject a certain tarot deck. For me, if I don't like the artwork I will not buy the deck. The Miss Cleo Power Deck is an example of art that I dislike. In my opinion, the art work looks cheap and unoriginal.

I have rather small hands for a man and a wrist injury that is aggravated by handling larger decks. I prefer to buy smaller-sized decks and steer clear of the jumbo sized one. The more popular a deck is, the more likely that it will be offered in various sizes. The RW is available from very small to playing card size to standard and even jumbo!

When I lived in South Carolina, there was a store over the border into NC that had hundreds of tarot decks. What made this store so great is that every deck they sold they had a sample deck for you to look through hanging on a wall. Today, when I'm interested in a deck I try to see as many images as I can online. One of my favorite websites for reviewing decks is Aeclectic Tarot. They even have a forum where you can discuss Tarot related topics with others. If you have friends who are tarot readers/collectors ask to see their cards and get their opinions on decks that you are interested in.

Purpose of Deck

Not all those who purchase tarot cards use them, many people collect them for their artistic or monetary value. However, I think it is safe to say that the majority of people who purchase tarot cards intend to use them. Some people have more than one deck. They may have one or more decks for personal use and one (or more) for performing readings for others. Some decks may be used strictly for meditation and path-working.  I’ve known some people to purchase decks for the express purpose of casting spells. Sometimes such spells may require the individual to burn a card in the flame of a candle, or bury two or more cards together. When deciding to purchase a tarot deck, consider what you will be using it for.

Finally, a very important consideration is price. How much do you have to spend on a deck and are you willing to spend that amount?  I have about 30 decks in my collection and there are still decks that I want but are too expensive due to their rarity and availability. For many years I wanted the James Bond Deck with 007 backs on it but it was always too expensive. Then, last year someone graciously gave me the deck for my birthday. I'm still on the look out for an affordable Salvador Dali tarot deck. So shop around and get the best deal that you can.

Which brings me to an old belief that is still floating around. I don't know where it started, but there is a belief that Tarot Cards should never be bought for oneself, that they should be given to you.  That being said, I believe that part of being a magickal person is making things happen for yourself, don't wait for the universe to drop the cards into your lap. I feel that if you want a tarot card deck and you have the money, then buy it!

Sometimes a deck will be given to you that has been used by another person. In these cases, all of the criteria above still apply to gifted decks.  Sometimes a gifted deck will not resonate with you, however if you cleanse and bless the deck you may find that you actually like the deck.

Although there are many factors to consider when purchasing a tarot deck, ultimately I believe that you will know when you have found the right deck for you. The right deck should speak to your spirit on some level. The artwork will be pleasing to your eye and should not make you feel uneasy or uncomfortable. The deck will feel right in your hand and emanate a positive energy.

Fill'er Up

Sympathetic Magic is the belief that 'like attracts like'. It is a concept often used in magic and is the basis for many spells and rituals. The most well-known form that sympathetic magic takes is in the use of voo-doo dolls or Poppets. Basically, a doll is made to represent an individual and whatever is acted upon the doll is also believed to occur to the individual.

The same concept can be found in other spells as well. For example, the color green is believed to vibrate at the frequency of prosperity (among other things), and red to love, blue to protection, etc.... therefore to cast a spell for money a witch will often use a green candle. Buckeyes are thought to resemble a young man's testicles, therefore buckeyes are often carried for male-potency and to attract sexual partners.

It has been stated that visualization is a form of sympathetic magic in that instead of making a physical image of our desires, we make mental ones. Furthermore, the philosophy of The Secret states that what you dwell on inwardly, you will manifest outwardly. This is another example of sympathetic magic.

So whatever it is that you want, you can easily have simply by tuning yourself to the frequency of your desire. Here's how.

How to Tune Your Frequency to Your Desires.

Begin this process early in the morning shortly after awakening. Think about what it is that you wish to attract/manifest and write this down on a piece of paper. Choose a candle whose color matches your goal and set it in a holder. Place your wish paper under the holder and light the candle.

Now spend at least 10 minutes on tuning your energy to the frequency of that which you desire. If you wish to attract/manifest love then fill yourself up with thoughts of love. Think about people that you love and focus on those feelings, visualize yourself happy and in the arms of the one you desire. If there is a particular scent that summons  those feelings and sensations for you then arrange to have it near so that you can smell it (I use Cool Water © and spray it on myself). Play music that puts you in a romantic, loving frame of mind. Place photographs on your workspace that remind you of love.

If it is your desire to attract prosperity, then fill yourself up with thoughts of money. Focus on what paper money feels like in your hand, if it helps, hold some cash in your hands. Focus on what money smells like, again if it helps get some 'new money' and smell it as you visualize yourself surrounded by money and all of it is yours!

The point here is that no matter what your goal is, pull it towards you through all of your senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch). When you are done, snuff out the candle. Continue to hold the energy that you've focused on inside yourself. If you begin to feel that you are losing your connection to that energy, then focus on those things which bring back that connect (visualization, color, sound, feeling, etc...)

Perform this ritual every morning for at least 21 days and use your tools to maintain that connection to the energy of that which you desire and you will find that you begin to manifest your wishes.

"Everything that exists, imagined itself into being."
------Sophie Anne, True Blood

For the last few days, I've been trying to change my negative thinking. My dominant thoughts centered around the idea that "My positive thoughts are powerful, my negative thoughts are weak." I thought that it would be hard to change, but honestly it hasn't. Maybe that's the secret in action? I also began telling myself over and over again that "I deserve love, and I want a real relationship!"

In addition to changing my thoughts, I have also change my actions. The past two days I've gone out of my way to go to one new place each day, because I doubt that I'm going to meet Mr. Right on my way from the bedroom to the living room, right? So, I'm thinking positively and I'm putting myself out there in the world. I will not even consider the possibility of failure.

The next step, I feel is to really define for myself what I want. The Secret says "To make a relationship work, focus on what you appreciate about the other person, and not your complaints. When you focus on the strengths, you will get more of them."

With that in mind, I sat down over a few days and compiled a list of qualities that I desire and admire in the perfect mate. They are:

  • masculine
  • intelligent
  • aggressive
  • loving
  • open-minded
  • attractive
  • laid-back
  • generous
  • Top
  • employed
  • romantic
  • car-owner
  • sense of humor
  • has own interests
  • athletic
  • spiritual
  • genuine
  • reliable
  • strong
  • confident
  • optimistic
  • dominant
  • independant
  • clean
  • muscular
  • successful
  • thoughtful
  • honest
  • healthy
  • funny
  • practical
  • energetic
  • considerate
  • loyal
  • brave
  • adventurous
  • respectful

This is just the beginning of my list, I'm sure that over-time I will think of more qualities. For now, my list stays on my love-altar as a reminder of what I really want and not to settle.

Another exercise suggested in the Secret is to "sit down and write out what you really want on a piece of paper. Write it in the present tense. You might begin by writing, 'I am so happy and grateful now that...' And then explain how you want your life to be."

With that in mind, I imagined my perfect life and this is what I wrote:

"I am so happy and grateful now that I have met and married the man of my dreams. He is everything I ever wanted in a man and more. We have a beautiful home and many friends. My husband is so successful in his career that I no longer have to work outside the home.  I am free to spend my days helping others through my spiritual practice, writing, taking care of our home, and him. I have never before been happier and more satisfied with my life. We travel all over the country, and abroad, several times a year. He has his interests which he pursues and I have my own. Despite our busy lives, we always make time for each other."

The Law of Attraction and Me

"Change {your} mind and change the world!"
-------theme from Wonder Woman

For the past month I have been sick with a head cold and sinus infection that I could just not get rid of. It was during this time that I came into another copy of The Secret by Rhonda Byrne as my original copy had been loaned to a friend who never returned it. I began using the book as a devotional, reading parts of it at random whenever I could focus my mind.

Every time I thought my cold had passed it came back overnight! Reading over my tweets and my facebook page I noticed how much I had been complaining about being sick and hating being sick. It dawned on me that by focusing on being sick I was preventing myself from healing. Not only did my cold get more and more severe, but my tinnitus became worse to the point that I felt it was driving me crazy. Only after I began thinking thoughts of 'perfect health' did my cold begin to go away until it completely disappeared.

As I continued to read The Secret, a book which espouses the idea that what you dwell on inwardly you manifest outwardly, I began to examine my life and how my thoughts have shaped my life. One of the major themes I have struggled with in my life is that of Love and Trust. One of my earliest relationships was with a very attractive, charming man who ultimately stole from me and almost destroyed my life. That relationship set the tone for all the ones that would come after. I always found myself unable to trust anyone who expressed an interest in me romantically. I thought that men were not interested in me for me, but for what I have.

As I grew older my thoughts began to change. My thoughts began to center on the idea that I was too unattractive to be loved...that I did not deserve love.  I always think that I'm overweight, I don't have a nice smile, I wear glasses, etc... and because of this no man will find me attractive. Even worse, I began to think that I wouldn't want to be with any man that found me attractive because he'd probably be ugly himself or that there would be something otherwise wrong with him.

That's exactly what I have manifested and no amount of magick is going to change that until I change my thoughts. I've engaged in unhealthy relationships (anonymous sexual encounters, pursued unavailable men) and even when certain men expressed an interest in taking the relationship further I pushed them away. out of fear and mistrust.

So it is now clear to me that until I change my thoughts I cannot change my life.
