Mailbag Monday: Don't You Touch My Mojo!

Dear Carolina Dean,

I really enjoyed your last entry in which you described the Nation Sack. I have been working with such a mojo bag for the past 6 months, albeit with my boyfriend's full knowledge and consent. Even though he knows about my Nation Sack, I have not allowed him to see it or to touch it because I don't want to kill the hand.

Although we don't presently live together, we often stay over at each others houses and sometimes I do work at my Love-Altar while he is there. Once a month, at the start of my period, I feed my Nation Sack with oil and leave it burning on my altar along side a candle.  I live in a small studio apartment and don't have many options to hide my activities. While my boyfriend has been respectful, and even willing, to go along with me I am also concerned about him accidentally spotting the bag while it is lying on my altar. Do you have any tips or tricks that will assist me?

Sincerely,

Diana

Hi Diana,

A Mojo-Bag Wrapped in White Cloth
Thank you for your question. This is an issue that I have come across several times before in the case of practitioners who have spouses, children, and/or roommates.

While on the surface it may seem easy to say just burn your candle (or whatever) when you are alone; but anyone who has ever lived with another person will understand that this is not always as easy as it may seem.

Many practitioners try to time their workings when they will be alone and undisturbed going so far as to coordinate with the others who live in the house or apartment. Most of the time roommates will find a way to work out these issues and other times you have to be creative.  Other folks set their altars / work spaces up in an area of the house or apartment where they will not be disturbed such as in a closet, attic, or basement or even an outside storage area. For example, in my apartment I have a 6" X 6" storage area off of my patio which is just the right size to set up a decent working area. It is very important that you not leave any candles unattended in these smaller areas as they present a great fire hazard.

If you cannot time your workings when you are alone or set up your work space in an area of your house or apartment where you will be alone or undisturbed there are a few things that you can do to keep your boyfriend from seeing or touching your mojo bag. For one, you can place an overturned tea cup or bowl over on top of your mojo bag and place your candle on top of that; or you can simply wrap your mojo bag in a clean, white handkerchief or even place it in a small decorative box on your altar. Finally, you may also want to invest in a cheap room-divider which you can set up around your altar area to prevent prying eyes from seeing exactly what you are up to.

Happy Hoodooing!

In the News: Four Women Held for Practising Witchcraft

Ras Al Khaimah: Four Arab women were arrested on the charge of using witchcraft and sorcery with the motive of exploiting men financially. The suspects allegedly collected huge amounts of cash from their victims but the total figure was not revealed pending the conclusion of the investigations.
Colonel Salem Sultan Al Darmaki, head of investigations at the criminal investigation department (CID) of police in Ras Al Khaimah, said the women were apprehended on Thursday after police set up a trap for them.
“An Arab woman complained to the police about the illegal activities of other three women. She herself was arrested as the police suspected her involvement in the activities. The four women were found violating the UAE residency law and practiced witchcraft in an apartment they lived in to dupe men and exploit them,” Col. Al Darmaki said.

A police specialised unit dealt with the case to verify the complaint and succeeded in arresting the head of the group.

“A police informant, a woman, sought an appointment with one of the sorcerers after convincing her that she wanted to work some magic on her husband whom she accused of planning to ditch her for another woman,” a source from the police told Gulf News.

Colonel Al Darmaki said police raided the apartment and arrested the suspects red-handed. An Emirati man was found in the flat at the time of the arrest with the three Arab women. The police found a large quantity of herbs and other materials used in sorcery rituals. Alcoholic beverages were also found in the flat.

Investigations revealed that the woman who had reported the case to the police had been a member of the group at an earlier stage and split from them because of dispute over the division of the money they made.
The suspects confessed to targeting men.

Col. Al Darmaki urged the public to be alert for such fraudsters and inform police at the earliest. “Witchcraft and sorcery activities are punishable by law,” he said.

Commentary: This was an interesting story that caught my attention because as the Colonel explains above "Witchcraft and sorcery activities are punishable by law," but what he fails to mention that often that punishment is a painful death.

While the writer left out many details such as the exact form of their spells as well as their motivation beyond gaining riches I cannot fathom a scenario in which these alleged witches would risk their lives simply for wealth; however, I would not completely rule it out. It is mentioned that one woman feared that her husband would leave her for a younger woman and presumably create a financial hardship for her. I also wouldn't rule out that their crimes were acted out of a sense of revenge or personal empowerment due to the manner in which women are treated in their society.

I am not versed in the practice of Arabic Witchcraft and Sorcery, however, as a spiritual practitioner I am aware that there are many spells and rituals in the Hoodoo Tradition which are designed to give the female an upper hand in the relationship and to allow her to dominate her man. Today, I would like to share some of these methods with you, my readers.

Menstrual Blood

One of the oldest, most powerful, and perhaps easiest of spells a woman can perform on her lover to dominate and control him calls for deploying one's menstrual blood in the man's food or drink without his knowledge. If he eats her blood, she can control him forever. For those women who, for whatever reason, no longer menstruate or produce menstrual blood vaginal fluid or urine is often substituted.

The Aiguillette

The aiguillette, or ligature as it is more commonly called, is a tool used by women (and gay men) to tie up a man's nature; that is, to prevent him from straying by making him incapable of achieving an erection with anyone but you, to make him want you, and to make him want to be with you only.

To make the aiguillette, measure his penis from base to head along with shaft with a piece of red yarn or string. Whether you do this covertly or with his knowledge is up to you. Next, you must have sex with him in such as way that he achieves an orgasm and you do not. Collect his semen and anoint the string with it and tie a knot in the string to tie up his nature.

The semen-anointed string tied in knot(s) is the symbolic act which ties up the man's nature and will make him always want to be yours. The fact that you were able to 'harvest' the man's semen presupposes that he achieved orgasm and therefore enjoyed the act. The fact that when engaging in intercourse for the purpose of obtaining his semen to anoint the string you have been directed NOT to have an orgasm yourself is to capture his nature and not your own. Such a tool is usually kept in a special type of mojo bag called a Nation Sack (see below).

The Nation Sack

The Nation Sack is a special type of mojo-bag utilized by women (and sometimes by gay men) to dominate and control her man and keep him faithful. When you prepare this mojo bag, you are doing so with intent. Your intent is to tie up this man's nature, make him faithful and loving to you, and prevent him from being able to have relations with any other person than yourself.

In creating a nation sack, you typically anoint certain items (roots, dimes, candles) with your menstrual blood (or sexual fluids) because these bodily fluids are believed to capture a man's sexual interest and attention. A woman's menstrual blood has chemicals in it, called pheromones, which attract (straight) males. You are also likely to anoint the same items with some type of condition oil as well, usually Follow Me Boy.

The act of anointing the roots and dimes (usually marked with each individual's year of birth) with your menstrual blood serves two purposes 1) To scent your mojo bag with your pheromones and 2) To mark your territory and establish dominance in the relationship and 3) The dimes are specifically anointed with your fluids/oils to make the man give you money and ensure financial stability for you. Once properly fixed, this mojo is often worn on your person below the wait or even in your bra. The man is never allowed to see it or touch it lest it lose its power over him.

Follow Me Boy Spells

Follow Me Boy is a condition oil specially formulated to be used by women (and gay men) to dominate and control her lover/husband/boyfriend. The female equivalent is called Follow Me Girl and is used by straight men and gay women on their respective lovers. Follow Me Boy oil can be deployed in several ways including, but not limited to, anointing the individual, a few drops may be placed in his shoes, shampoo, or his laundry, feeding Nation Sacks, and dressing candles.

A simply Follow Me Boy spells consists of marking the man's name on a purple candle (purple is the color of power) and anointing it with Follow Me Boy oil and your sexual fluids. Set the candle in a holder and place a photograph of the man underneath. If you don't have a photo, cross and cover his name with your own both 9 times. Anoint the four corners and center of the photo/petition paper with Follow Me Boy Oil and place a small piece of calamus or licorice root in the center. Fold the photo/petition towards you three times, rotating it clockwise one turn in between each fold. Light the candle and make your prayer or petition saying:

"With God's blessings, may [name] come under my command. As the sheep follows the shepherd, as night follows day; where ever I lead, there let him follow; where ever I stay, there let him be. In Jesus name. Amen."

Allow the candle to burn down on its own and dispose of any left-over wax by burying it in your backyard or in your special burial place.

Of course, there are other spiritual supplies designed to subdue others and bring them under your command such as Boss Fix, Bend Over ,or I Dominate My Man, etc.... but Follow Me Boy is arguably the most popular when the relationship has a love or sexual element.

MIPC: A Honey Bath & Onion Spell

"Before you sleep with her again, put a tablespoon of honey in the bath and take a honey bath. After you have sex, dry yourself off with that piece of muslin cloth I gave you. Hang it up to dry. Do not wash it. Later on, wrap it around a purple onion and tie the corners with a square knot. Then all you got to do is bury the cloth where she will walk over it or pass it by."

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
John Berendt, Hardcover Ed. ©1994, page 246

Commentary: Before I analyze this spell I think some background information is in order here. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is an account of real life events which occurred in Savannah, Georgia in the early 1980's. The story centers around the shooting death of Danny Hansford, a young man in the employ of a rich antiques dealer named Jim Williams. The story introduces many colorful characters, including Minerva who is described as the widow of Dr. Buzzard (a well known Rootworker, or Conjure Doctor) and a powerful “Voodoo” woman herself.

After he is arrested and charged with the murder of Danny Hansford, Jim Williams hires Minerva to assist him in his case by working the judge, jury, and prosecutor to help ensure that he is not found guilty. Although the author has made the popular mistake of believing that Voodoo and Hoodoo are interchangeable (which they are not), he has included a few interesting spells such as the one above.

This spell is given by Minerva over the phone to a caller whom we can infer is a young man in a sexual relationship with an older, married woman. There is an additional line in the narrative in which Minerva directs the caller to “don’t depend on her to give you too much money,” which may indicate that the caller is a gigolo and the woman is a client. The couple has presumably had a disagreement, likely over money, and the woman wants the young man back but she wants him to come to her begging for her to take him back.

With that said honey, as well as other forms of sweeteners, has long been used in the practice of Hoodoo to attract love, draw favor from another, or drive customers to a business. This spell may well be designed to fulfill all three of these needs. The use of a Purple, or Sweet, onion is further proof that the spell is at the very least designed to sweeten the woman to the caller.

The caller is also directed to use a piece of muslin cloth to dry himself off after having sex with the woman as this will incorporate their personal concerns into the spell as well and make it more powerful. The onion being tied using a square not (described as “two knots make one”) can be symbolic of tying the two people together into one mutually exclusive relationship. Finally, burying a spell where a person will walk over it or pass nearby is a very old method of deploying a spell (called laying the trick).

I feel that this spell has the possibility to work as intended. However, if I were to use this spell I would probably use the smallest onion I could find and tie up additional herbs and curios for reconciliation, fidelity, and attraction. In addition, instead of burying the muslin charm I would keep it in a shoe box under my bed and anoint it regularly with a condition oil specific to my purpose such as Love Me, Come to Me, Stay with Me, etc…..

Mailbag Monday: Celebrity Love Story

Dear Carolina Dean,

I have been going on every love-spell-casting website for me to get [a celebrity] to love me. Everyone has told me that I can't do a love spell on him if I have never even met him and never had any kind of relationship with him before. I only know him from his work. He is an amazing person inside and out.  Can I cast a spell on him even though we never met? For us to meet paths on a random encounter. Then get him to fall for me? Is that possible?

Sincerely,

A. Jolie

Merry Meet A.,

I have good news and bad news for you.

The good news is that all those other spell casters were WRONG! You can most certainly cast any spell that you like on anyone that you like and for whatever reason.

The bad news is that, given the situation that you described, your spell will more than likely fail and could possibly backfire on you in ways that you can't even imagine.  There's really no way for this person to suddenly fall in love with someone that they don't even know exists. In fact, a number of my colleagues actually have celebrities as clients and they are often paid to prevent things like what you are describing from happening. Instead of trying to get this celebrity to love you, I would recommend that you set a more realistic goal and perhaps work towards attracting someone who embodies those qualities that you admire in this man.

Start by erecting a Love-Altar where you can do your work.  When the moon is new. Write a list of all the qualities that you desire in a mate. Anoint the four-corners and center of the list with Love-Drawing oil and fold it towards you three times. Place the paper under an overturned saucer. Scratch your name on a red or pink candle and anoint this with Love-Drawing Oil as well. Place the candle on top of the saucer and light it making your prayer or petition. One of my favorites, which was given by Cat Yronwode on the Luck Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork Radio Hour goes like this:

"With the help and grace of God
May the one that I love
the one that loves me,
come to me now
as quickly as possible
and in a natural way."

I always add: "...Grant me the wisdom to recognize him when he appears and the courage to welcome him into my life when he does. In Jesus name. Amen."

Allow the candle to burn for about 10-15 minutes as you make contemplate the candle flame and think about those qualities that you've written down and the person who embodies them. Re-lit the candle as the same time each day for a total of 7 days repeat your prayer. On the 7th night let the candle burn itself down on its own. In there are any remains left behind, inspect them for signs of your work and then dispose of them properly (see links below).

The Devil at the Crossroads

A crossroads is any place where two roads intersect and form a sort of equal-armed cross, much like the plus-sign. Crossroads are the place where the world of man and the realm of spirit meet. Therefore, they belong to everyone and no one. Some folks divide crossroads into two types: male and female. Male crossroads are the three-way crossroads that form a capital T; the three points representing the penis and testicles. Female crossroads are the typical four-way crossroads which are said to represent the inner and outer lips of the vagina.

They are considered to be extraordinarily powerful and, as such, they are often the sites where spells and rituals are performed, offerings are laid and completed spells are disposed of. For example, folks often dispose of a portion of their used bath water at a crossroads after taking a cleansing spiritual bath in order to disperse the undesirable influence that was washed away. Similarly, completed spell remains, such as Vigil Candles, are left at a crossroads often in a paper bag or buried nearby.

Crossroads dirt is often collected and used in certain spells as well. For example, one recipe to attract a male lover calls for dirt from a three-way crossroads. In other instances, you can use the crossroads to lead someone away from you by taking dirt from their footprint and sprinkling a pinch or two of it in their shoes and then at every intersection between their home and the town limits.

The Devil at the Crossroads

In many cultures, the crossroads are associated with the practice of witchcraft and sorcery as well as with a number of entities including Hecate, Mercury, Ellegua, Ganesh, Papa Legba, St. Peter, and The Devil. Also known as the Black Man, the Devil at the Crossroads is not the Adversary mentioned in the Christian Bible but rather a helpful spirit that became conflated with Satan when African slaves were forced to practice Christianity.

Many of these spiritual entities are known for their power over the living and the dead, the ability to move freely between realms, removing obstacles, removing crossed-conditions, and opening the way.  Arguably, the most famous (and most misunderstood) Crossroads ritual is that of meeting the Devil at the Crossroads in order to gain mastery and skill in a particular endeavor.

The Crossroads Ritual

In “Hoodoo, Conjuration, Witchcraft, Rootwork”, a collection of folklore gathered by retired Angelican Minister Harry Middleton Hyatt between 1935 and 1939, several examples of the Crossroads Ritual can be found. Most of the rituals follow a basic outline with a few permutations (i.e. time of day, number of days, etc…)

To perform the Crossroads Ritual, bring the actual item that you wish to master to the crossroads at midnight for 9 nights in a row. For example, if you want to be a better card-reader bring a deck of Tarot Cards; if you want to master making mojo hands, you might want to sew a complete mojo hand over 9 nights.

As you visit the crossroads each night you may or may not see or otherwise be met by any number of black-colored animals.  On the final night, you will be met by a figure. It might be a person dressed all in black, it might be a black man (i.e. a person of African descent); however he appears it will be the Devil. If you don’t show any fear, he will take the item you brought from you and teach you how to use it properly. Finally, he will return the item to you and you will then possess both mastery and skill with the use of said item.
