MM: The Numbers Game

Dear Carolina Dean,

I was reading the page on your website about writing petitions and I have a questions. You say that names are written an odd number of times, usually 3, 7, 9,or even 13. My question to you is, if I am writing a petition for a specific purpose, how do I know the correct number of times to write the name or names?

Sincerely,

New to Hoodoo

Hi New and thanks for your question,

Basic Petition
As I stated on my website, the simplest petition of all consist of writing the person's name on a square of paper an odd number of times, usually 3, 7, 9, or 13. The most common seem to be 3, 7, and 9; however I am uncertain as to why 5 is rarely if ever used since it is associated with the "five-spot" of deploying ritual remains.  I believe that odd numbers are used, in lieu of even ones,  because odd numbers are thought to be both active and dynamic.

There are many factors that go into deciding how many times a name should be written down when formulating your petitions. Some folks simply have personal preferences and will always write the name a certain number of times. Its just their way.

In my personal practices,  the number of times you write a name on a petition should be based on your intent and those numbers that are in harmony with your intent.

For example, three is the number of manifestation but it is also associated with the Holy Trinity. Three is considered an all-purpose number of times to write a name. If you wish to manifest something, heal dis-ease, confer protection, of affect yourself or another in any way---- then write the name three times.

Seven is a very fortunate number that is associated with luck and attraction. It is also associated with the seven days of the week and the seven classical planets that rule over every human endeavor / goal.  If you are trying to bring about any kind of lasting change, write the name 7 times. That seven is associated with attraction is not to say that it isn't used to move something away from you as well. For instance, a name can be written on a piece of paper backwards to send that person away.

Nine is a very powerful number used to impose your will on others, to cross them, and control them. And finally, 13 is a number steeped in superstition. Often considered an 'unlucky' number it is used when you wish cross or uncross yourself, another person, or to reverse enemy work.

Again, these are not hard and fast rules. What is important, I believe, is that you find a system or thought process that works for you and to be consistent in your adherence to that system.

A Gambling Hand

Use the following items to prepare a gambling mojo hand on a Thursday when the moon is growing.

  1. 1st Pentacle of Jupiter (see note below)
  2. Lodestone / Magnetic Sand
  3. Rabbit’s Foot
  4. Chamomile
  5. Cinnamon Chips
  6. Silver Dime
  7. John The Conqueror Root
  8. Jupiter Oil
  9. Money Drawing Incense

Mark a green or yellow candle with your name and the words “winning luck”. Dress the candle with Jupiter Oil stroking your finger over your name towards you 7 times saying “In the name of Jupiter, spirit of wealth and increase, winning luck come to me that I may achieve my desire!” Set the candle in a holder and set it on top of an overturned saucer.

Take a red-pen and write your name on the back of the 1St Pentacle of Jupiter seven times. Anoint the four corners and center of the paper with Jupiter Oil. Anoint the lodestone with a drop of Jupiter Oil and place it in the center of the paper. Feed it some magnetic sand and say “As I feed you so will you provide me with the luck I will need to achieve my desire. Amen.” Fold the paper towards you three times and place it under the saucer on top of which is the candle.

Light the candle and say “In the name of Jupiter, spirit of wealth and increase may fortune smile on me that I may achieve my  desire!”

Next, take a red or green flannel mojo bag and one at a time anoint the hard items with Jupiter Oil, telling it what you want it to do and place it in the bag. Then place the soft items in the bag.

When you are done, anoint the bag with Jupiter Oil and smoke it in Money-Drawing Incense saying: “In the name of Jupiter, spirit of wealth and increase, may fortune smile on me that I achieve my desire!” Place the mojo bag near the candle and earnestly pray the 112th Psalm several times with your intent in mind. However, wherever you see the name “Lord” appears replace that with the name “Jupiter”.  When the candle is spent, remove the petition from under the candle, place it in the bag, and tie off the mojo-bag.

Carry the mojo-bag on your next to your skin when you go to gamble. I recommend inside your bra over your heart.  Several times throughout the day touch it and repeat your prayer saying: “In the name of Jupiter, spirit of wealth and increase, may fortune smile on me that I achieve my desire!”  Feed the mojo-bag a drop or two of Jupiter Oil every Thursday. If possible you may wish to burn or have burned for you a Jupiter Vigil Light while you are out gambling.

Happy Hoodooing!

MM: Planetary Hours

Dear Carolina Dean,

I hope you can help me with this... I need to do a money spell starting this Thursday, Jan.17/2013 for 8 consecutive days..... Would it be possible if you could tell me exactly what time each day to do it? I'd appreciate it very much.
Thank you
Hi,

As you know the 7 days of the week are associated with the 7 classical planets.
  1. Sunday-----------the Sun
  2. Monday--------- the Moon
  3. Tuesday--------- Mars
  4. Wednesday----- Mercury
  5. Thursday-------- Jupiter
  6. Friday---------- Venus
  7. Saturday-------- Saturn

In addition, the first hour of each day is associated with the ruler of that day. Therefore, the hour of Jupiter on Thursday will be at Sunrise.

For the additional days you can go to the farmer's almanac and get the times for Sunrise and Sunset in your area and then plug those times into this planetary hour calculator to determine the hour of Jupiter for any given day.

Finally, if you wish to learn how to do it yourself by hand, the please refer to the information below.

Planetary Hours

One timing method that witches often use to choose the hour of the day that they might perform a spell involves consulting the Planetary Hour Tables. There are two such tables, one is for Sunrise to Sunset, and the other is for Sunset to Sunrise. It is believed that each hour of the day and night is ruled by a planetary energy, and in that hour events and activities often coincide with the energy of that planet.  There are seven classical planets, which also correspond to the seven days of the week as mentioned earlier.

To work with the Planetary Tables, you need two pieces of information, the time the Sun will rise and the time that the Sun will set on the day that you have chosen for your magickal work.

How to Calculate the Planetary Hours

For the Day

Subtract the time of Sunrise from Noon, to determine the amount of daylight between those two periods, and add the time of Sunset giving the amount of daylight hours for that day in hours and minutes. Convert the hours to minutes by multiplying them by 60 and then add the minutes together, giving the amount of minutes in between sunrise and sunset.  Since the Planetary Hour Tables are divided into 12 hours, you will now divide the minutes by 12 giving you in hours and minutes the amount of time that each planetary hour will consist of.
Number a separate sheet of paper from one to twelve. Because the first Planetary Hour will begin at Sunrise, write down the time at which the Sun will rise beside number one.  Now add the previously determined amount of time of each Planetary Hour, in hours and minutes, to the time for Sunrise to determine when the first Planetary Hour will begin and end on that day and write that down.  Continue this formula until you have determined the window of time for each of the 12 hours.

Now look at the chart HOURS OF THE DAY, for the appropriate hour.  Some witches choose to work magick in the same hour that corresponds to the day on which they work their magick.  For example, if you are doing a love spell you would do it on a Friday, which is ruled by Venus, in the Hour of Venus. However, there will be times in which you can’t do your work in the hour that you desire.  In these cases, you may want to use the energy of another hour in which you do your magick. In the example above, you may choose to work your love spell in the hour of Mercury to open communication between you and another in order to obtain love.

For the Night

Subtract the time of Sunset from midnight to determine the amount of darkness between those two time periods, and add the time for Sunrise.  Since the Planetary Hour tables are divided into 12 hours, you will now divide the minutes by 12 giving you in hours and minutes the amount of time that each planetary hour will consist of. the following day, giving you the amount of night time hours for that day in hours and minutes. Convert the hours to minutes by multiplying them by 60 and then add the minutes together giving you the amount of minutes between Sunset and Sunrise the following day.

Now, look at the Chart Hours of the Night, to determine the appropriate hour for your working.

MIPC: Dr. Lotus' Hot Foot Spell

Dr. Lotus:                     So, young man, what can I do to help you?

Theo Huxtable:             I have a problem.

Dr. Lotus:                     Of what nature? Love? Legal? Money?

Theo Huxtable:            There’s this guy, Scott and he's trying to bird-dog my girlfriend. You know, move in on her?

Dr. Lotus:                     What do you want me to do to him?

Theo Huxtable:            Make his arms turn into lobster claws. Then you could make a tree grow out of his neck. Then make his hair catch on fire.

Dr. Lotus:                 So you'd like something painful. Perhaps even copious amounts of blood? Sorry, I don't hurt people.

Theo Huxtable:              So how are you going to help?

Dr. Lotus:                    I don't have to harm the gentleman. It seems to me what is required here is something to make Scott go away.

Theo Huxtable:             What do you mean?

Dr. Lotus:                     I mean, send him to another state or country.

Theo Huxtable:            You can really do that?

Dr. Lotus:                     Most certainly. I have documented proof.

Theo Huxtable:            How do you do it?

Dr. Lotus:                  I take this chicken foot and cover it with vinegar. Then I write Scott's name backward on sheep parchment. I burn the sheep parchment and sprinkle the ashes over the      chicken foot. And Scott will go away and he will know why.

Theo Huxtable:            Perfect.

Original Air Date: Feb. 16th, 1989

Commentary:  Before I begin my commentary I would like to remind my new readers that MIPC stands for Magick in Popular Culture. It is a series of blog posts in which I take a spell, ritual, belief, or practice from fictional sources and analyze them according to real-world metaphysical principles for accuracy or efficacy and even creativity!

That being said, the writer(s) of this episode must have done some research because there appears to be some elements to this spell that have very clear symboligical significance.

The chicken foot, I believe, here literally represents the victim's own foot or feet. Pouring vinegar over the foot would indicate things turning "sour" for him. In addition, in the Hoodoo Tradition, names are often written backwards on petitions or candles to represent a reversal, backing off or moving away from you. Burning the petition and rubbing the ashes on the chicken foot adds heat to the spell giving the victim the "hot foot" and sending him away.

With this symbolism in mind, I think that this is a clear cut spell; nonetheless, there are a few things I would do to augment it and make it more powerful. Being a professional practitioner, however, Dr. Lotus probably held back portions of his spell to prevent the client from duplicating it with any success.

First of all, I would flip (or butt) a black-candle, and mark it with the victim's name written backwards. I would then stroke the candle away from me over his name several times saying "(N) as I stroke this candle away from me, so may you move away from me  and out of my life forever. In Jesus' name. Amen."

Then I would write out my petition by writing the victim's name backwards on a piece of paper 3,5,7, or 9 times. I would anoint the 4 corners and center of the paper with Hot Foot Oil. If I had his personal concerns (hair, nail clipping, etc..) I would place this in the center of the petition and fold it away from me three times saying something such as "As I fold this paper away from me, so may (N) move away from me and out of my life forever. In Jesus' name. Amen." and then place the paper under the candle.

Next, light the candle and pray:

"With God's blessings,  as Jesus cast the demon out of the possessed, may (N) be cast out of my life. As Jesus made the blind to see, let (N) see that this is not the place for him to be. As Jesus made the lame to walk, let (N) walk out of my life forever. In Jesus' name. Amen."

Let the candle burn down and when it has done so take the petition from under the candle and tie it to the chicken foot by wrapping a piece of string or yarn away from you securing the petition to the chicken foot. Again, you may wish to say something like "As I wind this thread away from me, so may (N) move away from me. In Jesus name. Amen." Dress the chicken foot with Hot Foot Oil and place it in a jar of vinegar along with red peppers, black pepper, salt, and a few drops of Hot Sauce.

Finally, dispose of the jar. Choices for disposal include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. At a crossroads
  2. Burial in a graveyard (pay a spirit to send the person away)
  3. Thrown in running water.

NOTE: Since the original purpose of this spell was to hot foot a rival in love, I would definitely add words to my prayers and petitions stating that the person would not only get out of my life but my partner's life as well. For example: "As Jesus made the lame to walk, let John Brown walk out of my life and Jane Doe's life forever! In Jesus' name. Amen."

Prescriptive Rites: Case Study 3 (Hard Luck Hannah)

Preliminary: Today your client is Hard-Luck Hannah who has come to you for a reading and rootwork advice.  Hannah is a 20 something mother of two and she asks:

I have the worst luck of anybody I know. Ever since my husband got out the military we have struggled with money, car, and health issues with not just me but my children too. I would like to know of any items or rituals I can do for myself to bring us good luck, good health, and just better overall well being? I have always been a very positive person but life is really starting to make that hard.”

The Reading

  1. The Past: As a former military family, you are coming out of a way of life in which many sacrifices were made but one in which you also had a certain amount of security. With that life now behind you, the Hanged Man here speaks of seeing things from a different perspective. Everything for you has been turned “upside down” and you feel like your “hands are tied” from making any positive change.
  2. The Present: The Two of Cups here in the reversed position reaffirms what you brought up in your question. Your health has been adversely affected, your relationships have suffered, and you feel like you don’t have a solid foundation on which to build your new life.
  3. The Future: On the surface, this card looks very grim. It is an indication of confronting one’s fears, of experiencing loss and/or betrayal; however it also an indication of overcoming those fears and healing from the pain of loss. Often such experiences can be a blessing in disguise (notice the hand gesture the figure is making is one of blessing) because these experiences make us stronger.   Next to the Two of Cups reversed it may be an indication of infidelity.
  4. The Outcome: The Ace of Wands here is an indication of the life that is waiting for you. A hand (opportunity, a helper) reaching out from a cloud (blockages, obstacles) to offer you a living branch. Aces represent new hope and new beginnings which promise to bring many profound changes. The challenges of the past served as an initiation to test your resolve. Do not let fear hold you back, now is the time to act. Let your intuition be your guide.

Spell Recommendation

The trick to prescribing spells based on divination is not only to know the basics of spell construction, but also to be able to think of the symbols and pictures of the Tarot cards as spell components themselves. Just like other aspects of divination, however, you will also have to tailor the spells to the client’s situation and needs.

  • 10 of Swords:  Prayers of Thanksgiving

It has been said that God never gives us more than we can handle. In the bible, God often tested people with profound challenges before he allowed them to achieve greatness in his name. For example, when Jonah was tasked by God to call upon the people of Ninevah to repent their sins he refused. Jonah boarded a ship and was swallowed by a whale. Jonah called upon God for mercy and God made the whale spit him out after three days. Jonah went on to become a great prophet praising God’s name. Saul of Tarsas was struck blind and went on to become a great Apostle; and Job was tested by God through Satan by removing his wealth, losing his family, and cursing him with boils. In the end his wealth was doubled, his blessings were restored and more.

Therefore,  every morning, get down on your knees and pray the 23rd Psalm (The Lord is my shepherd…) and better it be if your husband pray with you. Each night before bed repeat the prayer together. Be thankful for the good in your life, but also be thankful for the challenges and the obstacles for therein lies the opportunity for you to overcome, to have life and have it more abundantly. Maintain your faith in God’s greatness, trust that he has a plan for you and, as a loving God, that plan includes only the best for you.

  • Ace of Wands: Peaceful Home
Once you have begun to change the way you think you are going to call in blessings for a peaceful home. The day before the New Moon, the entire house should be cleaned before dark, bedding changed, and floors swept from back to front and out the front door. Finally, any non-carpeted floors should be mopped with a cleaning agent that includes Pine-Sol or Ammonia and the water thrown out the front door with all ill luck.

The following morning, rise before dawn and take a cleansing bath consisting of salt, cinnamon-sugar, and a cap-full of ammonia. When you are done gather the following items.
  1. Blue Candle
  2. Olive Oil
  3. Rosemary
  4. Basil
  5. A coin for every household member, plus 1.
  6. Bible
  7. Pen & Paper
  8. White envelope
  9. Sewing Needle
Begin with a simple prayer such as the following: "God before me. God behind me. God Be with me and work through me to accomplish this task. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want for peace, protection, comfort, and security. Surely, these things will surround me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever. In Jesus' name. Amen."

Place a pinch of basil in the corner of every room in your house. Next, take your pen and paper and write the names of all those living in the home on a piece of paper, place the paper in the white envelope and set it aside.  Using the sewing needle, gently carve the names of all those who live in the house on the blue candle.

When you are done, take the olive oil and pray the 23rd Psalm over it and then use it to anoint the candle stroking it towards yourself saying "With God's blessings may the cup of my home overflow with peace, prosperity, comfort, and security forever and ever. In Jesus' name. Amen." Sprinkle some rosemary on a flat surface before you and take your dressed candle and roll it through the rosemary towards you several times so that the rosemary now sticks to the candle. As you roll the candle towards you repeat your prayer above.

Set the candle in a holder and place the white envelope underneath. Anoint the coins with the oil saying: "With God's blessings may the cup of my home overflow with peace, prosperity, goodness, and mercy forever and ever. In Jesus' name. Amen."

Place the coins at the base of the candle, light it and pray the 23rd Psalm out loud and with conviction. When the candle has burned out. Place the coins in the white envelope, seal it and put it in a safe place. If there are any remains from the blue candle, they should be buried in your back yard.

Resolution

Power of the Psalms & Other Bible Verses

Picture

Of all the books which make up the Bible, the Psalms are arguably among the most popular verses used in the practice of Hoodoo. These verses are often prayed, in whole or in part, during the course of performing a spell.

Typically, verses are chosen according to tradition or according to a personal interpretation of the text. In some cases, an entire Psalm may be prayed when only one verse speaks to the situation or issue being addressed.

In the 6th and 7th Books of Moses, a grimoire of magickal instructions attributed to the biblical figure of Moses who himself is regarded as a great conjure man, a list of uses for each of the Psalms are given.

Many of these uses not only prescribe the praying of the Psalms, either at certain times or a certain number of times, but also a physical action, such as anointing oneself with oil, to be performed while doing so. Some of the Psalms and their uses include:
  • Psalm 3: To relieve a headache or backache.
  • Psalm 5: To obtain the favor of a judge.
  • Psalm 7: To remove a hex.
  • Psalm 10: To be free of an evil spirit.
  • Psalm 15: For preservation against depression
  • Psalm 17: For safe travel
  • Psalm 23: To receive instructions in a dream.
  • Psalm 28: To reconcile with an enemy.
  • Psalm 29: For a peaceful home.
  • Psalm 32: To obtain a new job.
  • Psalm 35: To win a lawsuit.
  • Psalm 42: For dreaming true.
  • Psalm 45: To draw love.
  • Psalm 52: To stop gossip.
  • Psalm 54: To reverse evil.
  • Psalm 57: To change bad luck to good.
  • Psalm 65: For the removal of obstacles
  • Psalm 68: To reverse evil
  • Psalm 70: For fast luck, especially concerning money.
  • Psalm 79: For the destruction of enemies.
  • Psalm 91: For protection.
  • Psalm 112: To get a job.
  • Psalm 119: For money.

That the Psalms are among the most often utilized verses in the Bible for spells is not to say that other verses cannot be used as well. The Songs of Solomon is said to be used with great success by those who wish to attract a lover. In addition, those who wish to tear through blockages and open the way often read the story of the fall of the walls of Jericho, found in the first chapter of the book of Joshua, over a period of seven days. Other accounts say that the story should be read seven times on the first day, six times on the second day, and so forth until it is read but once on the seventh and final day.

Other Bible verses that are often used include, but are not limted to, the following:

  • Isiah 57:14 --To remove obstacles
  • Matthew 6:9-19 -- For the power of prayer.
  • Deuteronomy 14:25-26 -- To attract money.
  • Luke 3:4-5 -- To remove obstacles
  • Ecclesiastes 11:1 -- For the return of lost items.
  • Matthew 11:28-30 -- To remove a burden.
  • Ezekial 16: 6 -- For healing
  • Numbers 6:24-26 -- For blessing a person.
  • John 6:12-13 -- To always have food in the house.
  • 2 Timothy 4:14 -- To send evil back to an enemy.

How to Discover Bible Verses for Yourself

The best way to get Bible verses for your own work is simply to read your Bible. When you read a verse or passage that speaks to your spirit, inspires a working, or provides a remedy for a current (or even past) situation then write it down.

How Psalms & Bible Verses are Used in Hoodoo

Psalms and Bible verses are typically prayed with focused intent and/or conviction. They may be prayed at the altar, over candles, baths, or other objects. In addition, verses may be written on paper and placed under a candle, in a doll, a mojo-bag, or simply carried in one's pocket.

In the Cards 2013

Commentary: With the end of one cycle comes the beginning of a new one and you have the good fortune to be possessed of a great deal of potential. You are surrounded by strong allies in both human and spirit form who are willing to assist you. However, your advancement forward can often be blocked by an oppressive force, do not let it distract you and drain you of vital energy causing you to make poor choices. Instead keep your eyes on your goal and keep your thoughts, words, and deeds consistent with who you really are. Soon you must evaluate the wisdom of holding on to that which does not serve to uplift you so that you that you can keep and protect that which reflect your true-values as well as that which is necessary in order for you to grow. Nurture your creativity and talents and your efforts will be richly rewarded!
